Cornish Yurt: Albion farm.

We have introduced our environmentally friendly Yurt for Holiday’s in Cornwall on our smallholding near Mylor as an alternative to the traditional holiday cottage. We selected a Yurt rather than a tepee for the convenience of having a wood burning stove to keep it cosy.

The Yurt is set alone in a secluded corner at the top of a southwest-facing field. The field has been mown to give a large grassy area next to the Yurt and the field where we used to graze our pigs and cows is fallow and set aside and full of wildlife and birdsong, it especially enjoys the afternoon sun. There is a cottage surrounded by trees at the bottom end of the field but is not overlooked by other houses. Our home and cottage is across Bells Hill, the road to Mylor, at the bottom end of the field.
The Yurt (or mongolian gurt) is fully equipped for that ‘back to nature’ experience, with all the home comforts you need. Look up at the night sky through the roof light, peel back the sides to allow the air in or snuggle up around the wood burning stove, or sit by the campfire.

Facilities:

The yurt is 16ft in diameter with a ceiling height of 10′ or so it feels spacious and sleeps 4 and a cot comfortably. It stands on a level wooden deck with a wood-burning stove in the centre, and carpets and rugs on the floor. The Bed is a low king size chestnut wooden platform with a warm comfortable orthopaedic mattress. We supply a duvet sheets and pillows and slips. We ask you to provide bedding for  A cot is available if needed. The Pine wooden doors are more secure against the elements than canvas tent flaps. There is a gas cooker suitable for use in the yurt or use the kettle on the wood-burning stove. or cook under the stars on the camp fire. All cooking and eating utensils, to include cafetiere are provided. There is a hot shower, basin and camping WC in a separate cabin immediately adjacent to the Yurt with electric lighting heated towel rail. There is a fridge and freezer in a separate building close by. You are welcome to bring additional tents and guests by negotiation.

Design:

Although one yurt can look very much like another there are significant differences in design. This yurt is based on a traditional central Asian design, with a steamed wheel and steam bent roof poles which give the yurt its unique domed interior and steep, rounded profile. The Yurt is hand made in Cornwall on Bodmin moor by a craftsman from locally sourced ash coppice and oak in same way as the traditional Mongolian Yurt. The Mongolian Yurt, (Mongolian for ‘vaulted tent” The wooden poles are fastened with leather thongs and studs to form a fence-like structure (which are called “Hana” in Mongolian). The frame of the yurt is covereD with thick canvas or felt fastened from outside the yurt with ropes.

The yacht harbour and waterside pub and café are close at hand, with its passenger ferry links for Falmouth and St Mawes. The waterside pub – the Pandora inn is 15 minutes walk away but won’t be open until 2012 due to the thatch fire this year. The North Coast surf beaches are about 20 minutes drive.
