Cornish Yurt:
Albion farm.
We have introduced this environmentally friendly alternative
to the traditional holiday cottage at Albion House Farm, Nr Mylor.
The Yurt is set alone in a secluded corner at the top of a southwest-facing
field. The field has been lightly grazed by cattle for many years
and has had no sprays or fertilizers and is full of wildlife
and birdsong, it especially enjoys the afternoon sun. There is
a cottage surrounded
by trees at the bottom end of the field but is not overlooked
by other houses. Our home and cottage is across Bells Hill, the
road to Mylor, at the bottom end of the field.
The Yurt is fully equipped for that 'back to nature' experience,
with all the home comforts you need. Look up at the night sky
through the roof light, peel back the sides to allow the air
in or snuggle up around the wood burning stove, or sit by the
campfire.
Facilities: The yurt is 16ft in diameter with a ceiling height
of 10' or so it feels spacious and sleeps 4 and a cot comfortably.
It stands on a wooden deck with a wood-burning stove in the centre,
and carpets and rugs on the floor. Fitted linings add colour
and some insulation; there are futons to sleep on and trunks
for storage. A cot is available if needed. The lockable wooden
doors are less draughty and more secure than the flapping canvas
tent flaps. There is a gas cooker suitable
for use in the yurt or use the wood-burning stove, there is a
camp fire and Webber BBQ All cooking and eating utensils, to
include wine and champagne glasses are included. Bedding is a
proper bed with sheets included in the price. There is a hot
shower, basin and camping WC in a separate cabin immediately
adjacent to the Yurt with electric lighting heated towel rail.
There is a fridge and freezer in a separate building close by.
Bicycles are
available to explore and to link into the Fal River links ferries.
We can supply surfboards, dinghy and canoe.
Design: Although
one yurt can look very much like another there are significant
differences in design. This yurt is based on a traditional central
Asian design, with a steamed wheel and steam bent roof poles
which give the yurt its unique domed interior and steep, rounded
profile.
The Yurt is hand made in Cornwall on Bodmin moor by a craftsman
from locally sourced ash coppice and oak in same way as the traditional
Mongolian Yurt. The Mongolian Yurt, (Mongolian for 'vaulted tent"
The wooden poles are fastened with leather thongs and studs to
form a fence-like structure (which are called "Hana"
in Mongolian). The frame of the yurt is covereD with thick canvas
or felt fastened from outside the yurt with ropes.
Mylor village is 10 minutes walk away and has almost everything
from the 'Lemon Arms' Pub, butcher, village stores, post office,
fish shop and newsagent. The yacht harbour and waterside pub
and café are close at hand, with its passenger ferry links
for Falmouth and St Mawes. The waterside pub - the Pandora inn
is 15 minutes walk away. The North Coast surf beaches are about
20 minutes drive.
Rates are from £150 up to £450 per week with reductions
for 2 persons including wood, linen, gas, and electric (all bookings
